Windows 11’s New Insider Build Can Reinstall a Broken PC Without a USB Drive
Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 26H1 Beta preview brings Cloud Rebuild to Windows Recovery, along with sharper Magnifier controls and useful File Explorer fixes, but it is still an Insider-only test.

Microsoft has released Windows 11 Insider Beta (26H1) Preview Build 28020.3142, and its most notable addition is a recovery feature that could make reinstalling a badly damaged Windows PC much simpler. The build was released on October 2, 2026 and is available to Windows Insiders testing the 26H1 Beta branch.
The headline feature is Cloud Rebuild. Microsoft says the new recovery option can perform a full Windows 11 reinstall from the Windows Recovery Environment even when the installed operating system will not boot. Instead of relying on a USB installer, a custom recovery image, or the health of the existing Windows installation, Cloud Rebuild downloads the target Windows image and the device drivers from Windows Update.
That convenience comes with an important warning. Cloud Rebuild is still in preview, and Microsoft says it should be used for evaluation on non-production devices. The rebuild process reformats the system disk and removes locally stored files, accounts, apps, and settings, so users need to treat it as a destructive recovery option rather than a routine repair tool.
In Build 28020.3142, testers can launch Cloud Rebuild from Windows Recovery Environment by opening Troubleshoot, then Recovery and uninstall, and selecting Cloud rebuild. The recovery environment can connect through Ethernet or Wi-Fi, then displays the target Windows build, edition, and language before the user confirms the data-loss warning and starts the reinstall.
Microsoft is also refining accessibility controls in this build. Windows Magnifier now lets users enter an exact zoom percentage directly in its toolbar, while the Settings dropdown adds preset zoom steps of 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 400 percent. That gives users more precise control without repeatedly stepping through zoom levels.
File Explorer receives several smaller quality-of-life fixes. Folder view preferences such as sorting and icon size are designed to stay more consistent across different access paths and apps. The address bar also gains better support for paths containing double backslashes and quotation marks, while Microsoft has fixed issues affecting rename behavior and capitalization-only file name changes.
This is not a general Windows 11 update for everyone. Build 28020.3142 is a Windows Insider preview, and Microsoft cautions that features being tested in Insider builds can change, be removed, or never reach a public Windows release. For people who regularly troubleshoot PCs, however, Cloud Rebuild is the feature worth watching because it aims to make a clean recovery possible without preparing separate installation media in advance.
