Windows 11 24H2 Support Ends This Week: How to Check and Update Safely
Microsoft’s support pages point to an October 2026 cutoff for Home and Pro. Here is how to identify your version, back up and move to a supported release.

If your PC still runs Windows 11 version 24H2 Home or Pro, it is time to check for a newer supported release. Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 security update notes say those editions reach the end of updates on October 13, 2026. Microsoft’s separate Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle table displays October 14, 2026. The two official pages differ by a day, so the practical advice is the same: do not wait until the final date to update.
The cutoff applies to the specified version and editions, not to Windows 11 as a whole. A PC running a newer supported version is not affected by the 24H2 Home/Pro deadline. Enterprise and Education editions have a different servicing schedule, and company-managed devices may be updated according to an IT department's policies.
Step 1: Check which Windows version you have
Press Windows + R, type `winver`, and press Enter. The About Windows dialog shows the installed version and operating-system build. If it says Version 24H2, check your edition in Settings > System > About. You are looking for the combination of version 24H2 and Home or Pro.
Do not rely on the appearance of the desktop. Windows 11 releases can look similar even when their servicing deadlines are different. A recent monthly security patch also does not necessarily mean that the PC has moved to a newer feature version.
Step 2: Back up before changing versions
Copy important documents, photos and project folders to a trusted external drive or a cloud service you control. If you use an application that stores data outside the Documents folder, confirm where it keeps its files. Make sure you can sign back into the services you need after a restart.
On a laptop, connect the charger. Leave enough free disk space for the update and avoid starting it just before a meeting or deadline. If the PC has a history of storage errors or unexpected restarts, investigate those first and ensure your backup is readable. Updating is not a substitute for repairing failing hardware.
Step 3: Use Windows Update first
Open Settings > Windows Update and choose Check for updates. If a newer supported Windows 11 feature update is offered, read its description and select Download and install. Follow the prompts and restart when requested. Microsoft says version 26H2 is rolling out in a controlled way to eligible devices, so not every PC will see it immediately.
A supported version such as 25H2 may also be a valid destination for a compatible device. Microsoft's lifecycle table lists 25H2 Home and Pro support through October 13, 2027. Do not force a particular feature version simply because it has the largest number; the supported update offered for your hardware is generally the safer starting point.
What if Windows Update does not offer a new version?
Check for pending restarts and ordinary cumulative updates, then try again. Microsoft can apply safeguard holds when it detects a known compatibility problem, such as a driver or application that could fail after a feature update. A missing offer does not automatically mean your PC is unsupported, and bypassing a hold can create problems that are harder to recover from.
For work-managed devices, ask your IT team before changing policies or using a manual installer. On a personal PC, review Microsoft's Windows 11 update history and Windows Update guidance before attempting advanced installation methods. Avoid third-party upgrade utilities that ask you to disable security protections or install modified operating-system images.
What happens if you remain on 24H2?
Microsoft says affected Home and Pro devices stop receiving monthly security and preview updates, fixes for known issues, time-zone updates and technical support tied to that version. The PC does not suddenly stop booting or erase files on the cutoff date, but remaining on an unserviced version increases risk as new vulnerabilities are discovered.
There is one detail worth noting when reading the documentation: the September 8 support bulletin explicitly states October 13, while the lifecycle table displays October 14. Because both are Microsoft pages, we are reporting the discrepancy rather than silently choosing one and claiming the other does not exist. The safe course is to update now.
After installation, run `winver` again, confirm the new version and check Windows Update for remaining patches. Then test the programs and peripherals you rely on. A successful update is not just reaching a new version number; it is getting back to a stable, supported PC with your files intact.
