Sony Brings AI Upscaling to Standard PS5 With QSSR
Quick Spectral Super Resolution brings a lighter AI upscaling tier to the base PS5, with Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei first in line to support it.

Sony is bringing AI-guided image upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5 through a new technology called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR.
The feature was announced on October 1, 2026, as a lower-overhead counterpart to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, the AI upscaling system previously associated with PS5 Pro. Sony says the original PSSR remains its higher-end option on PS5 Pro, while QSSR is designed to deliver improved image detail and temporal stability within the performance limits of the base PS5.
According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, QSSR was developed through Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. The company says the new implementation relies on a streamlined neural-network architecture and software tuning aimed specifically at the standard PS5 hardware.
Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are the first announced games to use QSSR. Sony says both titles received patches on October 1 that add QSSR as an optional graphics setting on PS5.
Developers at Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions say the technology is intended to improve fine detail and image stability in complex scenes. Those statements describe developer expectations and observations rather than a guarantee that every game or display setup will show the same level of improvement.
QSSR does not turn a standard PS5 into a PS5 Pro. Sony continues to position PSSR as the more capable upscaling tier on its higher-end console, and the visual result of QSSR will still depend on how individual developers integrate it into their games.
Sony says QSSR will be made broadly available to PlayStation developers, opening the door for more PS5 games to adopt the technology over time. The company has not yet published a complete list of future supported titles, so availability beyond the first two games remains to be announced.
