PS5 Is Getting AI Upscaling: What Sony’s New QSSR Technology Actually Does
Sony's Quick Spectral Super Resolution brings AI-guided image upscaling to the standard PS5, with Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei among the first supported games.

Sony is bringing AI-guided image upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5.
The new technology is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR.
It is a lighter performance tier derived from the same research behind PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution on PS5 Pro.

What QSSR Does
Modern games often render internally at a lower resolution and then reconstruct the image to a higher output resolution.
The goal is to reduce GPU workload while still presenting a sharp final image.
Traditional upscaling can introduce softness, shimmering, or unstable fine detail.
QSSR uses machine-learning techniques to improve the reconstructed image, particularly around detail and temporal stability.
How It Differs From PSSR
PS5 Pro already uses PSSR, Sony's more advanced AI upscaler.
Sony says PSSR remains the higher-quality solution because PS5 Pro has more hardware resources available.
QSSR is designed specifically to fit the performance constraints of the standard PS5.
It uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation built to run efficiently on the base console.
Project Amethyst Is Behind It
QSSR comes from Project Amethyst, Sony's graphics collaboration with AMD.
The partnership focuses on machine-learning technology that can improve game rendering and image quality across future hardware.
That makes QSSR interesting beyond the current PS5 because it represents technology Sony and AMD can continue developing for future consoles and GPUs.
Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei Are Early Examples
Sony says Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are among the first titles to support QSSR.
Both receive QSSR as an additional graphics option on standard PS5.
Developers can use it to improve pixel-level detail and stability while maintaining performance targets.
This Does Not Turn a PS5 Into a PS5 Pro
QSSR improves image reconstruction.
It does not add the PS5 Pro's faster GPU, larger graphics capabilities, or other hardware advantages.
A standard PS5 game using QSSR may look cleaner at a given internal resolution, but that does not mean it will automatically match every visual or performance mode available on PS5 Pro.
Why AI Upscaling Matters
Games are becoming more expensive to render.
Higher-quality lighting, ray tracing, dense environments, and complex effects all consume GPU resources.
AI upscaling gives developers another tool for spending those resources on the scene while reconstructing the final image at a higher apparent resolution.
PC gaming already relies heavily on technologies such as DLSS, FSR, and XeSS.
QSSR shows the same trend becoming more important on consoles.
The Bottom Line
QSSR brings AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5.
It is a lighter alternative to PS5 Pro's PSSR, built through Sony and AMD's Project Amethyst work.
Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are early supported games, and QSSR could become increasingly important as developers push the base PS5 harder later in the console generation.
