Overwatch Season 5 is now live, bringing a new Support hero, a new Escort map, a Halloween event, and the beginning of the final chapter of the Reign of Talon storyline.

Blizzard calls the season A Grim Doctrine, and its biggest addition is Doctrine, a vampire-inspired Support hero built around manipulating lifeforce.

Doctrine Joins the Support Roster

Doctrine is designed as a mid-to-long-range Support.

His Eternal Scepter can heal allies and damage enemies, while his mechanical bat-like drones provide healing and increased attack speed to teammates.

His Infuse ability can strengthen other parts of his kit, while his Ultimate changes the balance of health across a fight by granting Overhealth to allies and limiting enemy maximum health.

The character also has a major role in the season's story. Blizzard connects Doctrine to Doomfist's past and to the events at Watchpoint: Grímsvötn.

Watchpoint: Grímsvötn Is a New Escort Map

Season 5 also introduces Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, which Blizzard describes as the first new Escort map in years.

The map is set in an Icelandic volcanic fissure and was originally an Overwatch facility before later being controlled by Helix.

In the story, it served as a prison for dangerous criminals and now becomes the setting for Doomfist's effort to free Doctrine.

The environment mixes fire, ice, industrial structures, and prison architecture, giving the season a much darker visual tone.

Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games Is the Halloween Event

The October 6 patch also introduces Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games.

The limited-time mode combines ideas from Mystery Heroes, Junkenstein's Lab, and Stadium.

Players can complete challenges to earn rewards and collect Offerings. Those Offerings are used to vote for characters that can later appear in the event.

Blizzard says the event runs from October 6 through November 2.

The Reign of Talon Is Reaching Its Finale

Blizzard says Season 5 begins the final chapter of the Reign of Talon narrative arc.

Doctrine's escape, Doomfist's actions, and the new Grímsvötn map all feed into that story.

That makes this season more than a normal content refresh. It is also intended to move one of Overwatch's longest-running current storylines toward its conclusion.

More Limited-Time Content Is Coming

Season 5 includes several additional events.

The Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collaboration runs from October 6 through October 26 and includes themed skins inspired by characters such as Sung Jinwoo, Igris, Cha Hae-In, and Choi Jong-In.

The Tech Witches Collection follows from October 9 through October 26.

Team Drives return from October 29 through October 31 for Competitive players.

Blizzard is also rotating older Battle Pass content back into the game through its updated reward system.

What This Means for Returning Players

For players who have not logged in recently, Season 5 has several reasons to come back at once.

There is a new hero to learn, a new Escort map, a time-limited Halloween mode, crossover cosmetics, and a major narrative progression.

The most important gameplay change is likely Doctrine because a new Support can affect team composition across both casual and competitive play.

The new Escort map should also take time to settle into the map pool as players learn routes, sightlines, defensive positions, and team strategies.

The Bottom Line

Overwatch Season 5 is now live with Doctrine, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, and the final phase of Reign of Talon.

The main seasonal event runs through November 2, while several collaborations and competitive events have shorter windows throughout October.

For active Overwatch players, this is one of the larger seasonal updates of the year.
