Minecraft Java Snapshot Puts Vulkan on the Default Path
The first 26.4 snapshot changes graphics defaults and includes fixes for older worlds and mushroom placement.

Mojang's September 22, 2026 release notes for Minecraft: Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 1 introduce Vulkan as the default graphics choice. The Default setting now follows Prefer Vulkan, and a startup crash no longer automatically changes the selected graphics API.
The snapshot also adjusts older-world upgrades: worlds created before Caves and Cliffs can generate sulfur caves beneath existing chunks. Red and brown mushrooms can be placed on solid-topped blocks regardless of light, although their spreading rules still impose lighting restrictions.
For players, the graphics change deserves attention without assuming a universal frame-rate boost. ByteSized tech's assessment is that a new default is a reason to check compatibility on your own hardware, not evidence that every system will perform better.
This is a Java Edition testing build, not a final update announcement. Mojang warns that testing versions may damage worlds, so back up saves or use a separate world folder before trying it. Enable snapshots under Installations in the Minecraft Launcher.
This report covers that specific snapshot; later builds may change its behavior.
