Microsoft 365 Family and Premium Move to 2TB Shared OneDrive Storage
The familiar 1TB-per-person model is being replaced by a shared 2TB pool. New subscriptions are affected now, while most existing customers have until a 2027 renewal.

Microsoft is changing one of the most practical benefits of its Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscriptions: how much OneDrive storage a household can use. Instead of assigning each person a separate 1TB allowance, the plans now use a single 2TB storage pool shared across the subscription.
The difference is significant if several people use the plan heavily. Under the older arrangement, six members could each have 1TB, for a theoretical combined total of 6TB. Under the new model, the same six members draw from 2TB together. That is a two-thirds reduction in the maximum combined allowance for a fully used six-person plan, although not every household was using the old capacity.
Who is affected, and when?
According to Microsoft's updated support documentation, new and upgraded eligible subscriptions use shared storage starting October 8, 2026. Most existing Family and Premium subscribers keep their current arrangement until the first renewal on or after May 2, 2027, unless they change plans sooner.
Microsoft 365 Pro uses a larger 5TB shared pool. Personal remains a separate 1TB plan for one person, and Basic continues to offer 100GB for one person. These are subscription storage allowances, not device-storage upgrades.
Why some households lose out while others gain flexibility
A family that used 4TB across several members will have a problem to solve when its renewal changes the plan. But a household where one person uses 1.4TB and everyone else uses little may actually prefer the pooled system: one member can use more than the old individual 1TB limit without paying for another person's unused allocation.
Microsoft describes the change as making unused storage more flexible. That explanation is true for uneven usage, but it does not erase the smaller overall maximum for a family with several heavy users. The practical impact depends on your total consumption, not just the number of accounts on the subscription.
Are family files suddenly visible to everyone?
No. Microsoft explicitly says the shared quota does not change file privacy. OneDrive files and folders remain private unless the owner shares them. The family members share a capacity limit, not a combined folder where everyone can browse one another's documents.
Microsoft also says accounts that exceed the new allowance do not immediately lose access to existing files. Its support page describes notifications and up to one year of continued file access while the owner reduces usage or buys additional storage. Subscribers should still back up important files and review Microsoft's account-specific notices before their renewal.
What Philippine subscribers should check
If you pay for Microsoft 365 Family or Premium in the Philippines, open your OneDrive storage dashboard and add up usage across the people on your plan. Then check your renewal date and whether an upgrade would trigger the shared-storage model earlier. Do not assume U.S. subscription prices or transition bonuses apply to a Philippine account.
Bottom line: The key number is no longer 1TB per person. For Family and Premium, it is 2TB for the group. The policy is documented now, and existing subscribers generally have time to prepare before their 2027 renewal.
