Amanita Design has returned to the world of Machinarium. The studio announced Machinarium 2 on October 8, 2026, bringing back Josef and Berta for a new puzzle adventure built around cooperation between the two robots. The sequel is listed for PC on Steam, but it does not have a confirmed release date or price.
The original Machinarium arrived in 2009 and built its identity around expressive, wordless storytelling and hand-drawn machinery. The new game keeps those foundations while changing how players solve puzzles. Rather than guiding Josef alone, players can switch freely between Josef and Berta, using each robot's abilities to overcome obstacles that one cannot handle alone.
A new valley, two communities
According to the official Steam description, the pair escape the original city but crash-land in a barren region. Below a cliff they discover a hidden green valley occupied by two robot communities. Elektrona lives in a monastery high in the rocks, while Oilton occupies the city below. Both are running short of power.
That premise creates a different kind of puzzle space. The original game's industrial city was a dense collection of interconnected mechanical contraptions. The sequel promises a broader valley with contrasting settlements and environmental storytelling. Amanita has not published a complete map or a chapter count, so claims about the game's length or open-world structure would be premature.
What changes in the gameplay?
The most important confirmed addition is character switching. Josef and Berta have different capabilities, and the developer says some puzzles require them to work together. Players can control the characters directly with a gamepad, while mouse input remains supported for those who prefer traditional point-and-click play.
Dialogue will remain nonverbal. The Steam page says characters communicate through thought bubbles, gestures and symbols rather than written conversations. This is part of what made the first game approachable across languages, although puzzles may still demand close attention to visual cues.
Amanita is again drawing the world by hand. Its description cites old-master drawings and Renaissance landscape paintings as influences on the sequel's architecture and environments. Composer Tomáš Dvořák, known as Floex, is also returning, with arrangements that mix the series' mechanical textures with a more orchestral sound.
PC requirements and Philippine availability
The preliminary Steam listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit or later, a 2 GHz Intel i5-class processor, 4 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible GPU and 5 GB of storage as minimum requirements. These are the developer's listed requirements, not performance results from independent testing.
Philippine players can wishlist Machinarium 2 on Steam now. There is no confirmed Philippine price, launch date or console version in the announcement. Do not confuse a live store page with a game that is already playable.
Why the announcement matters
Machinarium's appeal was never based on spectacle or an enormous feature list. Its appeal came from atmosphere, clear visual storytelling and puzzles that felt built into the environment. Bringing Berta into the playable system is a meaningful design change rather than simply a fresh backdrop.
The strongest reason to keep an eye on the sequel is that its creators are expanding the original formula while preserving the unusual presentation that made it recognizable. For now, the responsible expectation is a confirmed sequel with a Steam wishlist page, not an imminent launch.
