Intel Core Ultra 5 245K Review: Buy It for Mixed Work, Not Just Gaming

The 14-core desktop chip can suit a PC that splits time between work and play, but independent tests make the gaming value harder to recommend.

A CPU can look like an easy upgrade on a spec sheet and still be the wrong buy for your build. The Core Ultra 5 245K is a 14-core, 14-thread desktop processor with six performance cores, eight efficiency cores and boost speeds up to 5.2GHz. It uses Intel’s LGA1851 socket, so it needs a compatible 800-series motherboard and DDR5 memory.

Where it may make sense

Think of a PC that is used for spreadsheets and browser tabs during the day, then video editing or a game at night. The 245K gives you a mix of core types and a capable integrated GPU for basic display output if you are still choosing a graphics card. Intel lists a 125W base power and up to 159W maximum turbo power, so plan cooling and power around the complete system rather than the “Core Ultra 5” name alone.

The review trade-off

TechSpot’s independent testing found the 245K uneven across workloads: some rendering tasks looked stronger, while gaming results varied and fell behind competing chips in several tested titles. That makes this a harder sell as a gaming-first CPU. A PC built mainly for games should compare current local prices and game-focused reviews before choosing it.

Check the platform cost

The CPU price is only one line in the build. If you already own an older Intel motherboard, it will not fit this new socket; the board and DDR5 memory add to the upgrade. For example, someone replacing a CPU but keeping their current board should confirm socket support before ordering.

Why consider it? It can be worth comparing if your applications use multiple cores and you are already budgeting for the LGA1851 platform. I would not buy it on the strength of the core count alone, and I would not call it a clear gaming bargain without a current price comparison.
