AMD to Acquire World Labs for $8.2 Billion, Bringing Fei-Fei Li to AMD

AMD is buying spatial AI startup World Labs in an all stock deal valued at about $8.2 billion as it expands deeper into AI models, robotics and physical AI.

AMD is making one of its biggest AI acquisitions yet.

The company has agreed to acquire World Labs, the spatial intelligence startup led by AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion.

AMD says the deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

The acquisition is not just about buying another AI company.

World Labs develops models that generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, images and video. Its research also extends into robotic learning and simulation.

That gives AMD something it does not get from a conventional hardware acquisition: a team building the AI models that future compute platforms are supposed to run.

Who is World Labs?

World Labs is an AI model and research lab based in San Francisco.

The company focuses on spatial intelligence, which is broadly about helping AI systems understand and reason about three dimensional environments.

Its technology can generate and simulate interactive 3D worlds from different types of input.

That has potential applications in robotics, simulation, design, training environments and other forms of physical AI.

Why AMD wants model researchers

AMD has spent years building CPUs, GPUs, networking products and AI software.

Buying World Labs pushes the company further up the stack.

AMD says the World Labs team will give it deeper insight into how future AI models are evolving.

That can influence how AMD designs processors, memory systems, software tools and complete AI infrastructure.

If AMD understands the models earlier, it can optimize future hardware around the workloads those models create.

Fei-Fei Li will join AMD

After the acquisition closes, Fei-Fei Li is expected to join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su.

Li is one of the best known researchers in computer vision and artificial intelligence.

Her move into AMD would give the company senior research leadership focused directly on the relationship between models and compute infrastructure.

The World Labs team is expected to continue working on AI model research after joining AMD.

The deal is worth about $8.2 billion

AMD says the acquisition is an all stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion.

The company SEC filing says the purchase price will be paid in AMD common stock, subject to customary adjustments.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026 if it receives the required approvals.

Why this matters in the Nvidia competition

AMD competes with Nvidia across GPUs and AI infrastructure, but modern AI competition extends far beyond the chip itself.

Software ecosystems, model optimization, networking, systems and developer tools all influence whether customers choose one platform over another.

World Labs gives AMD deeper model research capabilities at a time when physical AI, robotics and simulation are becoming larger parts of the AI market.

The acquisition will not suddenly erase Nvidia software advantage or guarantee that AMD wins those markets.

It does show that AMD wants more influence over the full AI stack rather than remaining only a supplier of compute hardware.

What happens next

The transaction still needs to close.

Until that happens, World Labs remains a separate company and the announced leadership changes have not taken effect.

If the acquisition is completed as planned, the bigger story will be what AMD does with the team.

The most important question is whether World Labs research begins influencing future AMD chips, ROCm software, AI systems and robotics platforms.
